How to calculate board footage Lets use an
example of a 12 foot long log with a 16" small end measured inside the
bark. (You must measure the small end since this is where footage is calculated from.). If
you consult the Doyle log chart you can see that that log has 108 board feet in it.
Since the chart is based on circular saw mill and we use a Woodmizer® bandsaw, with a
thin kerf on the blade and experienced sawyering techniques, we can gain up to 30%
more lumber out of your logs from the Doyle Log Rule chart. So now in that log your around
140 board feet, do that for each log and you will get a rough but fairly accurate
account the total board footage.
| 140
- 108 = 32 bdft gained and at 7 to 9 dollars a foot for cherry the savings add up |
Travel cost
This fee may be waived depending on your circumstance or
if you live within 20km of the mill site or the warehouse there is no cost. A flat rate
fee applies after 20 km.
Blade and mill Advantages
We use the more expensive double hard 1 ½ " blade
not the cheaper 1" or 1 ¼ " blade to gives a better end product in which we
strive for. We set and sharpen our blades ourselves to better than, in our opinion,
manufactures specs and we only run a blade for 1 to 2 hours then change it. So to help use
maintain this high quality in our blades we ask you to clean and stack your logs with the
small ends facing in the same direction. If we should happen to strike metal in your log
and it damages our blades beyond repair there will be $60.00 fee for the blade.
Minimum on site charge
While there is no minimum
at the mill for milling, there is however a minimum of
$500.00 plus taxes to go on your site. Logs that are less
than 7 feet or 10 inches in diameter must be handle by
hand and therefore are subject to an additional cost please
consult with the sawyer prior to pricing of these logs.
Rent Or Buy
We have professionally
engineered stickers that you can rent or buy from us.
The advantage of using these stickers it assured thickness
across the rows of lumber. Reduces the possibility of
sticker staining from using wet stickers. Rent the stickers
by paying 60 cents per sticker and receiving 35 cents
back on the return of usable sticks. Or simply buy and
reuse these quality stickers for you next purchase of
green lumber. You can also use these sticks to stack you
dried lumber in your shop to keep your wood at the proper
moisture content. |
